Low Back Pain.
Low Back Pain can stem from a variety of causes. While some causes may be severe including disc prolapses or tumours these are thankfully rare. The majority of Low Back Pain is mechanical in nature. While pain may feel muscular it is important to understand that muscle spasm is the bodies attempt to protect an underlying problem. Therefore the use of muscle relaxants can often go against the bodies healing process and prove ineffective long-term. NSAIDs are quite effective for pain management however medium to long term use can cause serious problems such as stomach ulcers (Abo and Kawamara 2002).
The Chiropractic adjustment addresses the underlying problem and provides an effective alternative. The spine has many facet joints that over time due to bad posture or due to acute trauma begin to fixate. The fixated joint can interfere with nerve conduction leading to pain. Furthermore restoration of facet movement with the chiropractic adjustment has been shown to decrease proteins involved with inflammation (Roy et al 2010 and Ormos et al 2009) which have in turn been linked to pain stimulation. The chiropractic adjustment is a safe and effective way of restoring joint function thereby decreasing nerve interference and inflammation without the nasty side effects of NSAID's. Relief from low back pain can be seen over 6-9 sessions of chiropractic treatment consistent with evidence based practice.
